Set in Vancouver in the early 1900s, The Curses of Third Uncle is a tale of intrigue, adventure, and betrayal. Her family was desperate, and her scheming uncle threatened to send Lillian, her mother, and her sisters all back to China. Lillian's father had left home five months before and since that time there had been no news, no letters and no money. Would this be the clue she was looking for? It was an envelope! Slowly Lillian pulled it out and turned it over.
Something was hidden there! Lillian poked around, and then groped under the cardboard. Then her fingers stumbled over a suspicious bump in the bottom liner.
Frantically, her hands travelled through the jumble of socks and shirts and underwear. A foul stench burst forth and almost brought tears to her eyes. The fastener was rusty, but she forced it open. Lillian glanced furtively around, then knelt and dragged the suitcase from under the bed.
